Tunnels

About two weeks ago we went on a hike to see these tunnels. We found out about the hike from this website. It's an old railroad path, but the tracks have been removed. I guess they used the tracks to carry supplies when they were building Hoover Dam. The trail is 4.5 miles round trip if you turn around after the 5th tunnel. You can keep going all the way to the dam, but I don't know how much longer it is.

Ty and Marisa (and her friend Whitney) came along for the fun. They were a bit faster than us because Selah isn't the fastest hiker. Ty led the way, followed by the girls. A few other friends came too but they headed back when we stopped for lunch. So our "leaders" didn't know that we were going to stop after the last tunnel and kept walking. We followed and when the dam didn't seem close enough we decided to stop. Luckily we had cell phone service and could call Ty to have them turn around and come join us for lunch. We must have walked about 5.5 miles (closer to 6 for the others) when all was said and done. Jared started feeling sick before we stopped for lunch, so the hike back to the car was not much fun for him.

Selah did not want to walk anymore on the way back so Jared, Ty and Marisa took turns with her on their shoulders. I even carried her a little, but with Hyrum on my back, it didn't last long.

Here is a picture from early into the hike when everyone was happy and feeling good. The trail overlooks Lake Mead.

We had a really fun time, but decided that next time we bring kids on a hike we should have a frame backpack plus the mei tai (our baby carrier) or a jogging stroller (preferably a double jogger). And Jared didn't feel better when we got to the car. He came home and slept and puked his guts out. We don't know what was wrong for sure, but it must have been some kind of flu bug. He may not be jumping at the chance to go hiking again as soon as the rest of us. I'm already looking forward to another hike even with a heavy kid strapped to my back.
We never actually got to see the dam, so we hope to be able to drive out there sometime soon.

We love that hike. It is one of our kids favorite... we have never made it to the dam either. It is way to far for the kiddos to walk. But the tunnels are awesome.

I'm not necessarily jumping at the chance to go hiking again, but I do want to go hiking again soon... at least before it gets into the 100s.

Thanks for the info, Jessica. I did not know about these tunnels and my grandfather helped build the dam! He also worked on the dam as an electrician until he retired. We will have to check it out.
